Viam’s software is shaking up the robotics, automation, and Internet of Things (IoT) worlds— creating a pathway for businesses and developers to create, monitor, and manage smart machines more efficiently.
Whether it be building a robot that swiftly cleans up tennis balls during practice, creating a device that helps boats detect large marine animals, or helping a team access new kinds of sensor data to train machine learning (ML) models for their smart machines, with Viam, these ambitious projects are attainable.
Our Marketing Team is central to spreading the word about our innovative mission, gaining the trust of key stakeholders, and boosting platform engagement. This group, a mix of developer advocates and traditional marketers, uses innovative strategies to expand our market presence and drive enthusiasm within developer communities about what Viam has to offer.
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with six creative minds from Marketing to learn more about the team.
Let’s start with some introductions
As a company redefining a category, we needed to think differently about hiring. We didn’t want all of our marketers to have a background working only at one type of software company.
That's why when you look at this team, you'll find individuals who have worked with brands and agencies across business-to-consumer, business-to-business, and business-to-developer motions, with experience ranging from early-stage startups to hyper-scaling companies.
- Daniel Brody, Head of Product Marketing
- Mark Argyle, Head of Content
- Pat Patterson, Head of Growth & Digital Strategy
- Alyssa Demirjian, VP of Marketing
- Cristina Gomez, Head of Brand Design
- Sara Gharnit, Senior Social Media Strategist
Stay tuned, as I’ll also sit down with the other half of our marketers, Developer Relations, in the next Meet The Team blog to chat about their initiatives.
Onto the rapid fire questions
Alyssa, as the VP of Marketing, can you give us some insights on what the team is working on?
Alyssa: “Our focus is accelerating real-world traction. We’re doing a lot of product marketing, positioning, and user research to ensure we align the platform to critical real-world use cases. For instance, we're about to send a user feedback survey on our first community challenge (check out the winners), and our sales team just got back from an automation conference for market insights.
The big question is: what matters most to our core users, and how do we help them? Viam is at the intersection of cutting-edge technology (robotics, smart home, AI/ML) and so many urgent applications (climate, infrastructure, automation). It's an exciting moment to define and amplify that story.”
Bringing it back to the wider team, what originally brought you to Viam?
Mark: “I've worked in content marketing roles for more than 10 years, including at both early-stage and public tech companies. For the majority of my career I was based in San Francisco. Viam was the right opportunity at the right time for me. The potential for the product is enormous, and I can’t wait to see its real-world impact as the platform reaches more and more people. The company is at such an exciting stage of its growth, plus I get to work with so many talented colleagues. Moving to New York was a bonus!”
Sara: “I've always worked in marketing teams, primarily developing content strategies for consumer packaged goods, fashion, beauty, and other sectors. My curiosity to work in tech for a software company, the enthusiasm I saw from the team during the hiring process, and the opportunity to contribute to a startup's growth were my main drivers to work at Viam.”
What do you think makes working at Viam unique?
Daniel: “Viam is a product designed for improvisation and inventiveness, allowing engineers to shape automation to their specific needs—and the company itself reflects that creativity. There's plenty of room here to experiment, and we recognize that what we're doing is very novel. We need to try a lot of different things to see what works, whether it's in engineering, sales, marketing, or product development. It keeps things exciting and fun, as the day-to-day rhythm can vary greatly depending on what's gaining traction and interest."
Pat: “It’s a powerful and unique platform unlike any existing technology today that has applications across IoT, robotics, consumer appliances, smart home, industrial automation, and so much more—the opportunities to solve real world problems are endless.”
At Viam, we want to make sure we’re having fun while driving impact. As a team, what have you all done to connect outside of the day-to-day?
Sara: "We've enjoyed beautiful group dinners, sung karaoke (where I discovered I have the same go-to song as Cristina), played mini-golf (some of us are much better than others), and celebrated our wins with quick visits to a nearby wine bar."
It can’t all be fun and games (or can it?)! What is a project or deliverable you've done that brought you pride?
Cristina: “From our brand guidelines and website to company swag and wiring diagrams, almost every design and illustration you see, outside of the Viam app itself, is something I created. Being able to build something from the ground up and watch it grow has been a super fun learning experience.”
Alyssa: “Announcing our Series B! A huge company milestone and testament to the opportunity ahead.”
Sara: Working with developers and builders to create tutorials that show off the power of Viam and breadth of products that the platform has. Recently, Nicolai Neilsen, an AI engineer, built a Smart Plant Assistant using Viam that leveraged computer vision and a large language model (LLM).”
Sounds like you all collaborate closely across a lot of teams and departments within the company. Tell me more about how you work with them.
Daniel: “Product Marketing works closely with Product to develop content around new features, works with Sales to develop content for events and prospects, and works with Engineering to craft technical content about how Viam's products work.”
Sara: “We work with Engineering to showcase new product features, with Partnerships to highlight new customers, and the People Team to spotlight open positions and our company culture.”
Okay, last question. What type of robot do you hope someone builds using Viam that could change the world or make it more fun?
Pat: “I hope and believe that people will be able to build solutions to make the world more sustainable and increase the longevity of our presence on our planet.”
Cristina: “A robot that tosses confetti whenever something exciting happens...and then maybe another robot that cleans it up afterwards.”
Mark: “I'm hoping someone builds some kind of craft coffee-making robot. Imagine: a robot that pulls the perfect espresso shot, and knows just the right milk foam consistency.”
